Involvement in research and clinical trials are a key part of the Medical Oncology curriculum. The Associate Principal Investigator (API) Scheme, coordinated by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is open to applicants across all nations within the UK.
The initiative is designed to support healthcare professionals in gaining research experience by participating in NIHR portfolio studies/trials. Although these trials are primarily academically funded, some industry trials also register on the API scheme. Both interventional and non-interventional trials may register on the API scheme.
Key Features of the API Scheme:
1. Training and Mentorship: Early-career researchers and training clinicians work under the guidance of the study’s local PI on a clinical research study.
2. Hands-on Experience: Participants contribute to study management, patient recruitment, and data collection, helping them develop research skills essential for future PIs.
3. Recognition: Successful completion leads to formal recognition from the NIHR, important for registrar training and career progression. To do so, the API must complete a learning porfolio on NIHR Learn, including a checklist of mandated activities. This checklist must be signed off by the Local PI and a member of the National Study Team at the close of the scheme.
4. Boosts Research Leadership: Helps develop future Principal Investigators through provision of structured training and exposure.
The Scheme is particularly valuable for clinicians looking to transition into a research-active role within healthcare. The scheme lasts for six months, but investigators can remain on the scheme for longer if they would like to.
