Committee Member Blurbs

Karim El-Shakankery

Karim is the incoming ACP Trainee Committee Co-Chair (2026) and representative for Edinburgh and South-East Scotland. He works as a senior registrar in Medical Oncology at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre and a CSO Clinical Academic Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute of Genetics and Cancer (2025-2028).

Alongside his role within the ACP, Karim is a member of the ACP & Royal College of Physicians Joint Speciality Committee for Medical Oncology, the Medical Oncology and Clinical Oncology Intercollegiate Oncology Forum, and the Scottish Specialist Advisory Committee for Medical Oncology specialist trainees. 

Karim completed his primary medical qualification and BSc in Medical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 2017. Following this, he trained in various large teaching hospitals across North London, before returning to Scotland in 2022 to take up a registrar training post in Medical Oncology. He is also the NOTCH Edinburgh and South-East Scotland representative.

Ella Daniels

Ella is a medical oncology trainee in Severn, and initially joined the ACP trainee committee in 2022. Since joining, she has been involved with the 2025 national survey, arranging the 2024 and 2026 meetings, authoring a national trainee timetable guidance document (acknowledging the high rates of burnout amongst oncologists), and representing the trainee committee on the Specialist Advisory Committee board.

She has a strong interest in clinical leadership, having completed an Out of Programme Experience undertaking an RCP Chief Registrar role in 2025.

She will be co-chairing the committee from 2026 alongside Karim. 

Joseph Bae

Dr Joseph Bae is a Medical Oncology Registrar at Oxford University Hospitals. His experience includes roles at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Milton Keynes University Hospital, and the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Dr Bae is dedicated to integrating cancer biology with a holistic approach to patient care and supporting the trainee community.

Elsbeth Nye

Elsbeth is one of the ACP Residents’ Committee representatives for the South West. She attends the Specialist Advisory Committee for Medical Oncology specialist trainees and is the Less Than Full Time representative for the committee. She has been a Medical Oncology Registrar in the Severn deanery since 2022. Elsbeth completed her primary medical qualification and BA in Medical Sciences at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2016.

Su Lei Yin

Su is a Medical Oncology Registrar and one of the ACP Residents’ Committee representatives for the East of England, with a strong academic and clinical interest in cancer-associated weight loss and metabolic complications. She is currently undertaking a PhD focused on cancer cachexia at the Clinical Biochemistry Department, the Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge. As a committee member for the ACP, she is committed to help website improvement.

Rabia Gul

I am an International Medical Graduate from Pakistan and have spent over six years working within the NHS across a range of medical specialties. These diverse experiences helped me discover my true passion for oncology. I am currently a Medical Oncology trainee in the North East, undertaking the Flexible Portfolio Training Scheme with a particular interest in clinical informatics.

I am genuinely excited and honored to join this committee, representing both the North East and my fellow IMGs. Through this role, I hope to support colleagues, strengthen our community, and help create meaningful opportunities for trainees from diverse backgrounds.

Outside of medicine, I love travelling, exploring different cuisines and relax with family.

Paolo D’arienzo

Paolo is a Medical Oncology registrar on The Royal Marsden rotation (NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship, 2021 – 2024). He is currently out of programme pursuing a Cancer Research UK-sponsored PhD at the University of Manchester, focusing on KRAS-mutant non-small-cell lung carcinoma. He has been a trainee representative on the ACP/UKSMO Trainees’ Committee for the London region since 2023.

Paolo gained his primary medical qualification at the University of Pisa, graduating in 2016. He then worked at Liverpool University Hospitals and at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals for his general medical rotations.

Paolo completed a PGCert in Clinical Education at King’s College London (2022) and has a keen interest in assessments in medical education; he took up the role of Medical Oncology SCE Exam Board registrar representative in early 2025. In addition to this, his current projects include the ACP/UKSMO Mentorship programme and liaison with the ESMO Young Oncologists’ Committee.

Paolo has a longstanding commitment to voicing resident doctors’ views in national bodies. He previously served on the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh Trainees and Members’ Committee (2019 – 2021) and is currently the Medical Oncology registrar representative on the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Steering Committee (2025 – ongoing).

Alistair McLaren

Alistair is based at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and is a CRUK TRACC Clinical lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Alistair’s role on the UKSMO residents committee is in promotion of academic training within medical oncology, and has a particular interest in sustaining academic careers in medical oncology given the precipitous decline in clinical academics within the UK. Outside of oncology he enjoys exploring the islands off the West coast and baking.

Edwina Johnston

Edwina is the ACP/UKSMO Trainee Committee representative for Northern Ireland.  Her sub-role within the committee is focused on Education.  She works as a senior registrar in the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre in Belfast.

Edwina completed her BSc at The University of St Andrews, followed by her primary medical degree (MBChB with European Studies (French)) at The University of Manchester.  She undertook foundation training and general medical training in Northern Ireland.  Edwina worked as a Clinical Fellow in Medical Oncology in the GI Unit in The Royal Marsden, London.  Subsequently, she worked as a Research Fellow in GI Medical Oncology in The Royal Marsden prior to applying for medical oncology training.   

In 2022 Edwina returned to Northern Ireland to start her registrar training.  Within Northern Ireland her current roles include SACT Lead Registrar and mentorship for junior trainees.  In addition, Edwina is the Medical Oncology Social Trainee Representative for NISO (Northern Ireland Society of Oncology).

Anjui Wu

Anjui Wu is an NIHR-funded Academic Clinical Lecturer at University College London (UCL)/UCLH. Before joining UCL, he was an academic clinical fellow at the University of Cambridge and The Royal Marsden. His research focuses on developing novel cell therapies for solid tumours. As academic rep, he contributes to the ACP academic committee, supporting teaching activities and guiding trainees in applying for research degrees and academic projects. 

Rebecca Squires 

Becca is a Medical Oncology trainee in the Severn deanery and is one of the ACP Residents’ Committee representatives for the South-West. She is currently out of programme, working as a Senior Clinical Research Fellow in the Early Phase Clinical Trials Unit at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. Becca completed her primary medical qualification and BSc in Global Health at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2017. Following this, she undertook a year as an education fellow and completed her training in the Severn Deanery, before taking up an ACF training post in Medical Oncology in the region. Becca has a keen interest in medical education and is one of the Education representatives on the committee. Outside of work, she enjoys triathlon and travelling.

Lewis German

Lewis is the incoming regional ACP trainee representative for Yorkshire, and is covering the committee role of secretary. He is a Medical Oncology trainee at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. He has an interest in medical leadership and service development.

Lewis completed his medical degree and BMedSci in Medical Humanities at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2018. He subsequently completed his Foundation and Internal Medicine Training in West Yorkshire and is due to complete Medical Oncology training in 2029.

John Doherty

John is a Medical Oncology Registrar in North Wales and currently serves as the Welsh trainee representative, with a particular focus on education within the committee.

He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Manchester, earning a degree in Medicine with European Studies (Spanish), alongside a BSc in Pathology. He went on to undertake his Foundation and Internal Medicine training in the Merseyside region.

John has a strong interest in research and served as an NIHR Associate Principal Investigator for the HEAL-COVID trial at Aintree Hospital.

Sophie Banerjee

Sophie is a Medical Oncology Registrar working in South London and currently represents ACP trainees across London. She studied at Cardiff University, completing an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science before going on to undertake a postgraduate degree in Medicine.

Sophie completed her Foundation Training and Internal Medicine Training (IMT) in London. During this time, she also undertook a Junior Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and a Senior Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Guy’s Hospital, gaining a broad experience in cancer care across a range of clinical settings.

Sophie is particularly passionate about trainee welfare, recognising the challenges inherent in oncology training. She is committed to ensuring trainees feel supported, valued, and able to maintain a healthy balance while delivering high-quality patient care in what can often be a demanding specialty. She is actively involved in supporting mentorship and peer networks, and is currently contributing to the ACP/UKSMO Mentorship Programme. In addition, Sophie is keen to share knowledge and raise awareness of the wide range of non-research out-of-programme (OOP) opportunities available to trainees, helping others to explore diverse career pathways alongside clinical practice.

Dinakshi Shah

Dinakshi is a Specialist Registrar training in Medical Oncology at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, in Manchester. She undertook her medical undergraduate degree at The University of Manchester and has also completed a MRes in Medical Sciences. Prior to starting her specialist training she undertook a Research Fellowship in HPB Medical Oncology, at The Christie.

She has joined the committee this year as the representative for the North West and sits on the academic sub-committee. She is particularly interested in making research accessible for all trainees and is keen to highlight research and out of programme opportunities for trainees that aren’t on dedicated academic tracks. She also is the NOTCH representative for the North West.
